Tidbits

Yesterday Ryrie came into the kitchen and was asking me about the weather outside. I told him I wasn't sure how cold it was because I hadn't checked the weather. He asked how people find out how cold it's going to be. I said "they use thermometers and other...instruments...to determine that." (hmmm, that's something I could study up on a bit more) He got a funny look on his face and said, "you mean instruments like a violin or piano?" Then we both laughed. I said, "Yeah, when it's really really cold the violin plays way up high and squeaky!" He said, "yeah, and the piano starts booming really loud."
At the dinner table we were quizzing the boys about math and spelling and having them spell different things. They learn to spell phonetically at our school, so they were making the letter sounds as they spelled different words. Thomas got our attention by yelling "Mom!" (this is a generic greeting he uses to get anyone's attention) and then proceeded to "spell" along with the rest of the boys. We moved on to a discussion about whether the boys would rather be dads or boys. Will and Ry said they are glad to be boys because dads have to work so much all the time, but Owen was thinking beyond the daily grind when he announced, "I want to be a dad so I can stay up late!"
The other day I was listening to the boys play hockey from the other room. I personally didn't know what a Zamboni was until I was taking an ice skating class at BYU, but apparently my four year old knows all about them. He was watching the twins play, and during a break, he WAS the zamboni, and came out to clear the ice for them. Then he took a break from that and became the "ruf" (ref) for their game. I guess they ARE Canadians!

  2. I was thinking the other day of how we used to answer "throughout the body" whenever we didn't know something when studying physiology. I feel like that all the time when answering the boys' questions, too. There is so much that I either never really understood, or have forgotten! Luckily I have no problem admitting that I don't know things . . . :) I personally like the idea of the squeaky weather-violin, though. And I love how our boys know more about machinery than we do. :)

  3. Ha! Throughout the body! That is so true in this case. So is it barometric pressure, sun spots, or the westerly winds? :-)
