Burned Out

Ode to our oven:

You served us well in days of yore,
You cooked us food when we were bored,
Your color inspired us to seek for more,
And we'll remember you forevermore.

The first person to notice we had a new oven was Thomas. Of course!

I remember coming home from school one day in 3rd grade and trying to describe to my parents the way I was feeling inside. They finally understood what I meant and put a word to it--"stress." They both felt that I needed to take a break for awhile to overcome that feeling, as I was really too young to be putting pressure on myself.

This is something I think about a lot as a mom. When to let the kids have fun and be kids and when to urge them on to learn new things or have educational opportunities or the chance to improve at a certain sport or other pursuit. I really appreciated Elder Perry's talk in the last General Conference about his mother and the efforts she took to make sure not a minute was wasted in the day in furthering their religious and secular education. At the same time, I realize that kids do sometimes need to be on their own to come up with their own activities and learn through their play. I guess my challenge as a mother is to provide them with enough opportunities and see what comes of it!
