Ryrie Island

The boys and I discovered a fun place to play and explore on our river.  When we first found it, the river was low enough that we could walk along the piece of land (in the picture above) with just one scary part involving jumping over some slippery rocks.  When Tommy attempted this, he got wet, but he made it.  So even though it was really a peninsula, the boys named it Ryrie Island (since he was the first explorer to spot it.)  The next week we came back with dad, Uncle Tom and his girls to show it off, and were amazed to discover that it was disappearing under water!  Now it is truly an island, and the only way out is to swim or boat there.  However, we were able to get pretty close to it still.

After playing on Ryrie Island for a while we forged ahead through the brush and swamps and discovered other interesting things--like this tree with its roots sticking in the air, a hut someone had made out of willows, and a huge pile of driftwood that was fun to climb on and hack apart.  It was a good Victoria Day for us, although a little on the chilly-windy side.  We are excited to see what condition Ryrie Island is in next time we visit.

  1. So great to take advantage of all the beauty around us! We're excited to join you in some of it this July! Thanks for telling us there were updates too-- loved the spotlight on George especially, who is truly turning into quite the little man!
