Screech! Do I really want to do this? Hmmmm. Yesterday I gave all four boys a "violin lesson." I think Ryrie lasted the longest, at about 15 minutes. Will and Owen were about 10 and Thomas had about 4-5 "mini" lessons in between everyone else (he was very patient to wait for the entire lesson)each one lasting about 2 minutes which was the maximum amount of time I could stand the scratching. Thomas is enamored by the violin, to put it lightly, and who can blame him? For his entire life he has watched students arrive, seen them get the instrument out, pluck the instrument, play the instrument, apply rosin to the bow, put music on the stand, etc, etc. and now it is his turn! He gets out his violin, comes over to me and puts his back to me so I can reach around him to help hold the violin up. This is all he will allow. He is very possessive of the bow, unfortunately, so I can't hope to guide it there at all. When he gets it in the right place, his sound is actually quite strong! As you can see from the pictures, the 1/8 size violin is still too big for him. Anyway, it makes me think. I have always been quite disbelieving of people who say they learned to play the violin when they were two or three, but I guess if you count this as learning to play the violin, it would be the truth! I am a little worried that he might decide to "practice" on his own sometime and then we'd be in trouble.
I need to say something about Daylight Savings. Who invented it? Who can I send a letter to so it can be done away with? How did Arizonians get so lucky? Not only is my Circadian Rhythm totally messed up, but each clock in my house is set to a different time, which shows me how inaccurate I can be at such a thing as setting clocks ahead just one hour! Needless to say, D.S. has, instead of "springing" me forward, taken the "spring" right out of my step.
Play on! Give me . . . exCESS of it!
ReplyDeleteI love these pictures. What a cutie. I wonder what it would be like to have an actual "prodigy" on your hands (like Dusty, 'I am a Child of God' at age 3 etc etc.) and if you would know? I never know if my kids are actually good at things or if I'm just a doting mother.
And Daylight Savings. So, didn't we just go OFF of it? Or not? I never know. It has messed us all up too. But I think Fall is when you START it, and Fall never throws me as off. (Because you get to sleep _extra_, I suppose.) The 'spring' out of your step, har har har. :)
If I'm not mistaken, it was Benjamin Franklin who conceived the idea of Daylight Savings. And then someone in the federal government decided to expand the months to "conserve more energy."
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I'm liking about Daylight Savings right now is the fact that my kids sleep in a little bit.
I love Thomas's enthusiasm for the violin. So cute!
those may or may not be the cutest pictures i've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteAh Rach-- DST is a minor adjustment in your world of topsy-turvy! You are up before dawn anyway, so what does it matter!?
ReplyDeleteWe're excited to hear a screeching concert next time we're in town!
Thanks, Rach. How are your teeth? It always seemed to me that beginning violin players can be the cause of cavities! However, these boys are something.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Mom
