Birthday Week

Happy Birthday to James and George!
Monday we celebrated James a day early, as Tuesdays are his late day at work. He requested strawberry ice cream cake which was yummy. The boys love their Daddy!
Georgie's birthday fell on Thursday, another busy day. His mother did not make him a cake this year, but his dad found a cute one at Wal-Mart that had fluffy icing which was very popular. He got a mini pillow pet and underwear for his birthday.

This has been the coldest week of the year so far, getting down to -44 C (-25 or so F) two days. Life continued, nevertheless. I was grateful I could hunker down at home and bake, do loads of laundry, and...potty train! Monday morning when I went to get George dressed, he didn't want me to put another diaper on him. I had been thinking we were almost out of diapers and I wouldn't buy more, and so I was mentally a bit prepared for this. We've been doing the timer method, which is working pretty well so far. The only trick is getting it matched up with Georgie's body timer. Also, if he has lots of drinks in between, the timer method gets a little mixed up. However, we are pressing forward, and most days now he only has one or two accidents. He loves when the timer goes off and we run up to the bathroom, but he's not always happy to sit down for me. He sits for .001 seconds and then jumps up, announcing "Aw Donah!" (all done) and it is sometimes hard to convince him to sit back down. He has a stack of books beside him which he enjoys perusing as he sits there, but I should probably bring some new distractions into the bathroom. Owen pointed out to me last night that Georgie is tired of those books, so we better change them. He has the cutest little buns in the world, and looks quite fetching in a pair of undies.
He likes to flush the toilet and say, "bye bye!" as it goes down. He loves to shout, "potty time!"(his version of it that is). We'll see how long the joy of it lasts though. Already he has had times where he certainly doesn't want to sit there. But, we have begun the journey, and there's no getting off the potty train.

A bit about our two year old: Georgie loves to be where I am. This is very sweet and rewarding, but also challenging at times. He adores William and Ryrie and trusts them. This is probably because they always treat him very sweetly. He also loves Owen and Tommy, but since he often (daily) receives injuries from them, he doesn't really trust them. He gives hugs and kisses to his brothers most days on demand, unless he isn't in "the mood." He has a terrific scowly face which will change to a smile pretty often if you kind of laugh him out of it, but it can also turn into quite an angry cry. The boys have noticed this cry and fear it--as do I. It can chill your bones and deafen your ears. We are working on not encouraging this cry.
Georgie has the Spencer silliness in his bones. He charged into the kitchen the other day brandishing a sword and wearing a knight helmet. He knows how to use the sword too, and is quite a dangerous little knight! As Nana pointed out (she was watching on web cam) he was well-protected on his head, but as he was wearing no pants, his legs were a bit exposed!

George has the policy of "one word fits all" in a lot that he says. For example, his word "Unck"--sometimes the n is silent, sometimes not. This word can mean "truck, stuck, drink, snack or milk." His word "Cackie!" could mean "cracker, cereal, cookie, or yucky." Simplification makes sense, right? He has got a great goofy grin, and a happy, contagious laugh. This makes up for the blood-curdling cry he is capable of. Georgie likes to sit at the bar and eat his snacks. It seems that since he is two, he really doesn't like to sit in his eat seat unless we are all sitting down to a meal. So he and Tommy usually eat their lunches and snacks at the bar. George can get up on the stool, but he often just asks for help, saying, "Want uppie!" He can certainly tell you what he wants with the sweetest little inflections in his voice. That combined with his smile is a pretty killer combination. He is just very adorable.

When I am teaching violin, George is my little companion. He likes me to leave the door a little open, so he can come and go as he pleases. If the door gets shut, he will stand at the feet of my student and politely and sweetly request that they open the door for him. He likes to bring books and cars into the room--sometimes hockey sticks--to show us and he will sit and read the books, either on my lap, the floor, or the little couch in there. He seems to realize that when my students are there, I have to stay in that room. He is very good about this.
Georgie is really into books. He will sit for long periods of time on his own, pulling books off his shelf and looking at them. He's amazingly quick at spotting little hidden recurring pictures within pictures, if you know what I mean. He enjoys being read to, and will keep requesting books at bedtime so he can put off being put to bed. He still naps every day, usually for about 1-2 hours a day. It is nice when he wakes up happy and calls for "Mommy! Daddy!" to come get him out of his crib. Most days though, he wakes up fairly grumpy. So it is! I've had people ask me if he has the temperament of a red head. I guess it's too soon to tell if his temperament is toddlerish or red-headedness. Time will tell I guess! We love our little two year old!
