St. Patty's Day and Leprechauns

St. Patrick's Day took me by surprise this year. Well, partly. I actually thought it was the big day on Wednesday, instead of Thursday. So I planned broccoli soup for dinner and dressed myself and George in our green clothes. Luckily I have more green clothing...I was planning on making green pancakes--much to Tommy's disappointment I didn't end up doing that and James and Tommy made some green cereal--but I didn't take the leprechaun trap into account. Owen and James made one and set it out March 16th. I didn't think Owen was really hoping to catch anything, because he and Thomas have been scared of leprechauns since last year, and I thought we finally got them over that by telling them the "truth" about the little fellows, so I didn't put anything in the trap. What would I have put in there anyway? I don't have any little clothes or shoes on hand. What do prepared parents put in those things? When I woke up in the morning, I realized he might need some sign that the leprechaun had come and gone, so I sprinkled some glitter-dust around and thought I could convince him that those were the leprechaun's footprints. Nope. When I looked at the trap with him he pointed an accusing finger at me and said, "that was you!" He set it out again the following night (I didn't know he was going to do it again!) and he was very sad when yet again, he caught nothing. I felt un-spontaneous and un-creative. I didn't even make a four-leaf clover or paint a rainbow with the kids like we sometimes do! I will plan better for next year.

When I asked the boys who in our family looks most like a leprechaun, they all voted on Georgie, of course. I agree that leprechauns would be pretty cute and I would definitely want to catch one if they looked like this!

Tommy is still asking when we can eat green pancakes. Maybe this morning?

  3. That was a great trap! We have yet to tell the "truth" about their origins. We are sure thinking of you this week and hope that George's curiosity is curbed for a bit while you recover. Lots of love to those in the North!

  4. Oh, I am so happy to hear we are not the only ones having the leprechaun dilemma with our boys. As if the Santa/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy lies weren't bad enough. Our boys are CONVINCED that leprechauns are supposed to leave a gift of chocolate green rocks. So much convinced that we had no choice but to make a treasure hunt for them. Of course we got the appearance of the rocks all wrong and they still hunt for green rocks to lead to another treasure every day. It's so hard to match their expectations. I'm impressed you went as far as sprinkling glitter around.

On another topic, I have a recent post about favorite children's books and would really love to find out some of your favorites, as I'm sure they are great. When you have a minute, could you stop by my blog and discuss?
