I had the best belly laugh in months yesterday with Tommy. We were on our backs with our feet up on the couch and a blanket over us and I told him the story of Little Black Sambo. A very strange story. At the beginning of the story I was telling him there is Little Black Sambo, Black Mambo (the mama) and Black...Bambo (the papa--I was sure this wasn't right, but it was all I could come up with). Tommy wrinkled up his face and said, "Bambo? That's a silly name!" and then he started to giggle and then I giggled, then he burst out a little more, then I did, and we just kind of crescendoed together to a really fun laugh. It felt so good, and it was really fun to do with him. Now I don't know if I'll ever be able to tell that story with a straight face again!
He also didn't believe me that the tigers turn into butter at the end, and the family eats it/them on their pancakes. Yuck!
Mmm, how nice. That inexplicable non-stop giggling happened so often when I was with you. Fun to share with your kids!
ReplyDeleteLittle Black Sambo was updated in a new book: same story, new names, and new setting (India? Africa? Somewhere that makes more sense, without the "racist" overtones that I think made the original go out of print.) It's called "Little Babaji" (and in that one it's Mamaji and Papaji)---it's cute. But I think your "Bambo" is even better. :)
Thanks for the very fun update, Rach! It gives me much joy to read about the boys and all their sayings. I can just imagine Tommy saying that and hear his giggles! George's pictures are so cute! You have quite a group there!
