The Power of The Minute

Yesterday I was sure I would not get dinner made before 7:00 or have any dishes done before I went to bed. Miraculously, I found myself with two stretches of twenty minutes each to accomplish those tasks. I love days like that, when I know what I need to do but also feel the patience to wait for my "golden" opportunity. I think I am a more effective individual when I have things I want to do and can therefore seize the opportunity to do them when those minutes arrive. Also, if I choose to sit and hold a sleeping baby and read some more chapters of Jane Austen, I can also do that with great comfort and ease, and let the other things wait...for another quick twenty minute rush later on. I think with my kids, the power of the minute is very obvious. Sitting down to play "Go Fish" with Owen and Thomas for 10 minutes, helping Owen sound out some words and write some down for 5 minutes, smiling at George and rubbing his legs for a few minutes, playing a quick round of hockey with the twins...those things don't take much time, but they are so satisfactory and there is so much more peace in the house when I do take find those minutes to spare...or they find me!

  1. It's so true. It always amazes me how much I can get done in short spaces. Sometimes I don't even start doing something because I feel like I won't have time, but it's always better when I just take the 20 minutes I have and do _something_ with it. And I need to remember to spend those short stretches with the kids, too. I feel like I always have to rush around from one thing to the next, but in reality, I DO have time to sit and play Go Fish. And hold sleeping babies :) Good thoughts Rach.
