More about George

When James and I were "dating" (mostly via email and phone), we loved talking about names for future posterity. We were sure we'd have a girl first so we decided on her name right away and never pinned down any boy names. The name George was brought up even then, and as each boy has come along it has been included on the list. James has loved the name for a long time and he has two ancestors named George Spencer. One lived in Nephi, Utah and was very instrumental in preventing the slaughter of many settlers by the Native Indians in the Mt. Nebo region (there'a a plaque honoring him in a park in Nephi by the old school house where the drama all took place). The other George was a great uncle to James and lived up here in Magrath, Alberta.

A few hours before we were to be discharged from the hospital, James and I were in the hospital room discussing names. There was a white board in the room and we had written up our top three (George was not on the list at this point). We knew we wanted to include the name James somehow, and it seemed too abrupt to say George James. After much deliberation and looking and looking at "the baby," James walked over and added George Jameson to the list. Gradually the others were erased, as we both looked at him and said he definitely looked "Georgish." His uncle Trent, who had secretly been sending us psychic vibes was quite pleased, since earlier that morning when he called to congratulate me on the arrival of George I had laughed and told him that wasn't an option anymore.

It's a pretty neat experience naming a child, and a lot of responsibility too. We were relieved that we finally found a name that we both felt good about and that seemed to belong to him. James commented on the way home from the hospital that maybe George had been orchestrating the arrival of all the boys from heaven and just kept that name coming back to our minds so we wouldn't forget that he was to come too. His middle name is Jameson, after James, and that is fun because they almost share a birthday (James' is the 17th). We love him and are excited to see what and who he becomes!

  2. I love the name, as I may have already said. What a sweetie!! Sam is particularly pleased with "Jameson." He said he thinks everyone should have a middle name like that (like the patronymic/patrynomic?? I always forget which it is---anyway, but less confusing because it's a middle not a last name!) and wants us to use "Samson" if we ever get a chance! :)
