Owen is 6 years old today! We have been celebrating him for two days since his birthday fell on a Sunday. He got to go with James and the twins to a hockey game last night and one of the players gave him an autographed mini stick! He was thrilled. He requested ham and tacos, a purple smoothie (no green stuff in it)and pancakes AND waffles, so we've been spreading out the requests over the two days. His cake was supposed to be both chocolate and vanilla, so we compromised with chocolate icing on a vanilla cake.
Last night at dinner we told some things we love about Owen and some memories we have of him and he sat listening with a sweet look on his face of pure enjoyment while everyone said things about him. This morning he enjoyed hearing the journal entry I wrote when he was a week old about his birth and him as a baby. He was born on a Sunday, so this was an extra special birthday for him.
Owen has joined hockey this year. He has been excited about it trying it out for at least a year. He had no fears about it, least of all the fact that he's never really skated before. James said it was pretty incredible to watch him at his first practice. He fell down at least a hundred times during the hour, and just kept jumping right back up again. He has never complained about suiting up (it takes at least 15 minutes to get all his gear on--pads, skates, etc--)or anything about it. He loves it. We went skating as a family this weekend and he is doing so well! After only 2-3 weeks of hockey, he can now go around the rink in less than a minute, and he and I played tag and it was a bit tricky to escape from him! It's pretty fun to see him learn a new skill.
Owen loves kindergarten. He has a lot of friends there. We met one of them at the ice arena. Owen said, "hi Jonathan!" and started a conversation right away. He is definitely not shy at all. On Friday when I came to pick him up from school, he told me that he had not gone to recess because he was embarrassed about wearing his "sunday" shoes to school. They are nice brown ones, not slick black ones, but he didn't want to get them dirty and he was a little embarrassed. I guess I should have tried harder to find the missing shoe of his other pair!
For Owen's birthday we decided to buy him some art supplies. He is always coloring and we felt like it was a crime for him to have to use these old dried up markers we have around here. So he got a lot of fun things from us and from Grandma too. He has broken them in already, coloring up a storm all this morning and afternoon. I love to see his artwork, it makes me happy.
Owen is an integral part of our family. He is so much fun and we love his hugs and kisses and silly dances. We love you Owen!
Yay for Oboe!!!! We love you.
